Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon Call it Quits, Nick Promptly Slapped with a Gag Order on the Details

I love me some Mariah Carey. I truly do. Aside from boasting an epic voice, a coquettishly ditzy persona, and a fine-tuned yet oft-misunderstood sense of humor, Mariah has somehow managed to re-brand the traditional image of a “diva” into something palatable and quite endearing.

Unfortunately for Mariah and her “80’s baby” husband, Nick Cannon, their connubial bliss has expended. According to TMZ, Nick confirmed earlier this week that the pair have been residing in separate quarters – houses, actually – for many months. This announcement came on the heels of Mariah’s apparent outrage at Nick having revealed the identities of a few notches on his bedpost to “shock jock” Howard Stern, which roster included former Pussycat Dolls’ vixen Nicole Scherzinger, effervescent pop cutie Christina Millian, and reality TV (and sex tape) royalty Kim Kardashian.

Today, TMZ reported that Mariah’s camp was none too thrilled with Nick’s apparent “off the cuff” announcement. The couples’ respective lawyers have reportedly already negotiated a Marital Settlement Agreement, successfully resolving all outstanding financial and custody issues. The fine print includes knee-deep legal repercussions for Nick should he be inclined to peep the word “Mariah” – whether directly or by insinuation – ever again.

I am pleased to hear that the couple has amicably resolved the terms of their separation, especially with respect to their adorable twins, Monroe and Moroccan, colloquially dubbed “dem babies” as per Mariah and their namesake website, www.dembabies.com.

Mariah is reportedly “heartbroken” by the divorce. I am sure Nick isn’t doing so well either.

On the upside, Mariah’s most prolific works are typically post-scripts to various tales of woe and hard-knocks, including her infamous legal extrication from her music label chief ex-husband Tommy Mottola and the commercial failure of her film Glitter. And, if, humor is said to thrive in the wake of personal turmoil, Nick will hopefully keep the masses laughing.

I wish them both the best.
